Return of the Bees
Earlier this week, the Year 2 scholars tended our honeybee colony.
Wearing the now familiar beekeeper suits, they were inducted with such insight by apiary specialist Ali Alzein. Ms Verity Handyside effused about the children’s’ sense of wonder as they methodically inspected the hive.
The children were thrilled to observe the bees in action, see the honeycomb up close, and watch a bee larva hatching. Ali also discussed the anatomy of the bee, showed examples of the wonderful bees’ 'wiggle dance' and explained how and why they are so important to our lives on Earth.
I’d like to thank the school’s patrons for their generosity in funding this important initiative and Ms Melissa Kiley for her unerring tenacity in ensuring that the bees returned to us before the end of term.
