It’s that time of year again… A frisson of excitement filled the air as our Year 5 children stepped back in time to experience what it might have felt like to be an evacuee during the Second World War.
With gas masks carefully packed, name tags around their necks and ration books tucked safely away, the children prepared to leave their homes behind. There was excitement about the journey ahead, but also sadness and uncertainty as they said farewell to their loved ones. The journey to the station brought the reality of evacuation to life.
A powerful and memorable way for our Year 5 children to understand that history is not just about dates and facts — it is about the people, emotions and experiences behind them.
