Food Growing Programme

Thanks to a joint enterprise between RBKC Ecology Service and Hammersmith Community Gardens Association, Thomas Jones have joined the fully funded School’s Food Growing Programme.

Fortnightly, children from Year 3 are led by community gardener Cathy Mcloughlin in learning about plants, nature and organic food growing. They are developing the garden in Oak Rooms to become a kitchen garden growing vegetables, fruit and herbs. So far, the children have planted seed potatoes, lettuce, radishes, tomatoes, strawberries and blackcurrants. They have learnt about the importance of earthworms to the soil and the names of the various shrubs and flowers in the garden. They have also enjoyed visits from the ‘gardener’s friend’ - the curious robin. This time spent in nature and learning outdoors not only supports curriculum learning about plants and healthy eating, but also has associated benefits for physical and mental health and wellbeing.
